Although this last week has been relaxing and calming on the education
front, it has been riveting and exciting on the athletic field. Here is what
happened this week:
The Girl's Basketball team, although finishing the season with a losing
11-14 record, received a #8 seed and home court advantage in the first round of
the CCS Division 2 tournament. They played last Thursday against #9 Leigh in an
intense back-and-forth game. In the end, they came out ahead by three points
with the score of 68-65. They then had to try and defeat the top ranked team in
CCS, Presentation. They played on Saturday, but were defeated 62-42.
Congratulations to all the basketball girls on an excellent season!!
The Boy's Basketball team had their best season in years, winning the
El Camino League Championship title with their 21-5 record (11-1 league). This
earned the team a #6 seed in CCS with home court advantage and a first round
bye. They ended up being pitted against #14 Los Gatos, a team
from the De Anza League. Here is how the Mercury News described the game:
"It was quite a sight at Chester F. Awalt
Gymnasium. No. 6 Mountain View had just survived with a 50-48 victory over No.
14 Los Gatos and Spartan fans were storming the floor like they were all
holding winning lottery tickets." In overtime our Boy's team managed a
very close win and moved on to the third round of the CCS tournament, against
#3 Leigh. The played hard on Saturday, but fell to the Longhorns 64-57.
Congratulations to the team on a magnificent, groundbreaking season!!! Special
props to James Watanabe, who won league MVP, as well as Brett Hughes and
Nick Wang (1st Team All-League) and Brian Kaestner (2nd Team All-League).
The Girl's Soccer team
had an excellent season as well, finishing with a 13-2-5 record (7-1-4 league) and winning
the De Anza League Championship. They earned the #3 seed in CCS as well as a
first round bye. They ended up having to play #6 Monta Vista on Saturday,
a team they had beaten once and tied once this season. The game was close the
entire time, and no team scored in both regulation and in overtime. This led to
the game being decided on penalty kicks. Both teams went back and forth evenly
with both goals and blocks. On the 12th penalty kick, the Lady Spartans won the
game after a Monta Vista kick hit off the post. Congratulations to the Girl's
team for their awesome and extremely nerve-racking win. They move on to play #7
Woodside on Wednesday, March 2nd at Valley Christian High School at 7pm.
Woodside has defeated our Girl's team from CCS each of the last three years, so
this game is personal. Make sure to come out and support the team on
Props to Sarah Benett,
Marisa Leone, Kirsten Belinsky, Emily Andrew, Emma Donckels, Allie Gamble, Lizzy
Browne, Tavi Crum, and Haley Plamondon for their efforts on Saturday.
The Boy's Soccer team
also had a fantastic season. For the first time in MVHS history, both the girls
and boys soccer teams won the De Anza League Championship. The Boy's finished
with a 15-1-4 record (10-0-2 league) to earn a #2 seed in CCS and a
first round bye. They played immediately after the girl's soccer game against
the reigning CCS champs, #10 Alisal. This game was also very close, with the
opposing team going into halftime with a 1-0 lead. In the middle of the second
half Riley Hanley scored a game tying goal. This led to a tie in regulation as
well as a tie in overtime, which meant yet another game being decided on
penalty kicks. Hanley scored the first PK, and goalie Robbie Gamble blocked Alisal's first kick.
The teams went back and forth again, until after the 5th kick, where Mountain View won
5-4. They move on to play #11 Menlo-Atherton at Piedmont Hills High School on
Tuesday March 1st at 7pm. Make sure to come out to support this exciting team.
Props to Robbie Gamble,
Riley Hanley, Mackie Kelly, Raspreet Sandhu, Mikey Polisso, Tyler Officer, and
Lucas Mohageg for their efforts on Saturday.
wouldn’t mind taking a few moments of class time to share these results
and recognize any athletes on these teams, that would be greatly appreciated!
