MVLA Press Release

MVHS Student Athletes Earn Academic Honor

School days can be long and tiring, especially when a student is balancing studies with participation in extracurricular activities, making high achievement in both all the more notable. That’s just what three Mountain View High winter sports teams have done.

The Central Coast Section of the California Interscholastic Federation has announced the recipients of the 2017-2018 Winter Season Scholastic Championship Team Awards which recognizes the top five Varsity teams from each Central Coast Section sport with the highest collective grade point average of all teams competing in that season’s sports.

Of a list of more than 150 schools, Mountain View High School (MVHS) is one of only two high schools with three varsity teams on the winter list. They are:

Boys Soccer: average GPA 3.58

Head Coach: Jim McGuirk

Assistant Coach: Al Valdez

Girls Soccer: average GPA 3.74

Head Coach: Ivan Bandov

Assistant Coach: Morgan Becker

Wrestling*: average GPA 3.37

Coach: Francisco Hernandez

*This was the first year for wrestling at MVHS.

“It is truly impressive that these student athletes achieved such distinction in the classroom while committing themselves to their sport and teams,” said Dr. Jeff Harding, MVLA superintendent.

The student athletes each received a letter of congratulations from CCS Assistant Commissioner Jennifer Watson, who said, “Your teams had one of the highest collective grade-point average of all teams competing in that sport.”  The winning teams will receive certificates at the CCS playoff events.

Deadline EXTENDED for Intra-district Transfer to MVHS

Although our Open Enrollment window for transfers from Los Altos High to Mountain View High has closed, there is still space available at MVHS and we will continue to accept requests until MVHS reaches capacity. Families who are interested may use the standard intra-district transfer request form.

For the 2018-2019 school year, the open enrollment transfer capacity for intra-district transfers at Mountain View High School will be no more than 78 students. No intra-district transfers will be accepted for students requesting to transfer from Mountain View High to Los Altos High at this point.

Students and parents interested in an intra-district transfer should complete and submit the forms to Educational Services in the District Office: 1299 Bryant Avenue, just past Mountain View High's student parking lot.

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents

Boys Adrift: Raising Authentic Boys Engaged in School and Life

Dr. Leonard Sax

From kindergarten to college, American boys are less resilient and engaged than they were two decades ago and the gender gap in academic achievement continues to widen.  Drawing upon 26 years of clinical experience and scientific research, Dr. Sax will explore how social, cultural, and biological factors have created an environment that impedes the healthy development of many boys today.  Dr. Sax will share concrete strategies to help us as parents connect more deeply with our sons and guide our boys to stay engaged - and grow into productive, self-reliant, authentic young men.

Topics include:

How much time spent playing video games is too much time, and how do we know?

Which video games are OK, and which are not, and how do we know?

What has caused the dramatic drop in the testosterone levels of young men over the past 60 years? Why does it matter?

What research has been conducted regarding the effect of medications for ADHD on the developing brain?

Dr. Sax is internationally recognized for his four parenting books, Why Gender Matters (2nd Ed., 2017)Boys Adrift (2nd Ed., 2016)Girls on the Edge (2010), and The Collapse of Parenting (2015) – a New York Times best-seller and has appeared on the TODAY show, PBS, NPR, CNN, Fox News, and the BBC, and many other national and international media.
