Principal’s Message

Happy Friday!

I would like to thank the parents who have been able to attend the Parent/Teacher conferences this week.  I think that it is delightful for our parents to be able to walk on our campus and get to know their students’ teachers a little better and to get a sense of what experiences students get on every day.

If you weren’t aware, our STEM Week has ballooned into a seven-day affair.  Days one and two were this week (Thursday and Friday) and the will continue all of next week.  Monday will be Mole Day, which will be followed by a week of activities ending with our STEM speakers on Friday.  The schedule for STEM week is included in this Gazette.

Finally, I would like to thank the instrumental music teachers for the concept of a “Guest Conductor Concert.”  This was one of those bucket list items for me and probably for the admin team as a whole.  I have included a few pictures of the event and I will admit that I was nervous beyond belief.

Have a great weekend.

Go Spartans!

Have you ever felt like you and your teenager are constantly fighting? Do you worry about having difficult conversations?

We would like to invite you to join us for an important community event addressing Asian-American and Latino parenting challenges. All parents are welcome. Scripted scenarios addressing adolescent stressors, challenges, and difficult topics commonly seen in East Asian, South Asian, and Latino families will be performed by volunteer actors. These scenarios will be followed by an opportunity for discussion.

Parents are asked to attend without children in order to create an environment for honest discussions about parent-teen communication challenges.

The event will be held Thursday, November 2, 2017, 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Los Altos High School Eagle Theatre.

Produced by Stanford CHIPAO, a group formed out of Stanford Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

MVHS String Quartet to Join Touring Beatles vs. Stones Show on Campbell Stage

When the touring show Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Showdown comes to the Heritage Theatre on Sunday, October 29, the Mountain View High School String Quartet will have the privilege of joining the professional musicians on stage to add some orchestral texture to the evening.

The show pits Rolling Stones tribute band Satisfaction against rival Brit boys Abbey Road in an all-out musical showdown for rock dominance. The string quartet will perform seven songs with the bands.

The show:  The two greatest rock 'n' roll bands of all time face off in Beatles vs. Stones - A Musical Showdown. Taking the side of the Fab Four is Abbey Road, one of the nation's top Beatles tribute bands. With brilliant musicianship and authentic costumes and gear, Abbey Road plays beloved songs spanning the Beatles' career. They engage in a "showdown" of the hits with Stones tribute band Satisfaction - The International Rolling Stones Show, who offer a faithful rendition of the music and style of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and the bad boys of the British Invasion. The production includes multimedia, period costumes and vintage instruments. It has toured for years, with a critic for the Los Angeles Times at one point declaring: "this is the most unique tribute show in decades." The Campbell show is part of a 125 city tour of the U.S., Canada and Australia.

The string quartet: Seniors Cecilia Jing, Hannah Spray, Nathan Horowitz and junior Coral Chen will join the bands for the songs "Eleanor Rigby," "Yesterday," "A Day in the Life," "Hello Goodbye," "Hey Jude," "As Tears Go By," and "Ruby Tuesday."

All quartet members perform with the MVHS Chamber Orchestra, the school's most advanced ensemble, which received a Gold rating for its performance at the 2016 New York International Music Festival at Carnegie Hall. Members belong to prestigious area orchestras, including the California Youth Symphony and the El Camino Youth Symphony.

How the "Beatles" and "Stones" connection was started: The producers of Beatles vs. Stones approached Mountain View High School Orchestra Director Jason Kneebone looking for a talented ensemble which could hold their own with a rock band in front of an audience. The show commonly hires a local quartet to augment the production while on tour.

The quartet's Beatles or Stones fans: All of the quartet members are Beatles fans. Jing's favorite Fab Four tune is "Yellow Submarine" and Spray prefers "Across the Universe." Both Chen and Horowitz's favored Beatles song is "I Want to Hold Your Hand."

Quartet for hire: MVHS's quartet performs at weddings and community events and is available for hire by contacting Jason Kneebone at 650-940-4608 or  jason.kneebone (at) MVLA.

The details: Two of the greatest bands of all time face off in a high-energy, adrenaline-pumping musical showdown. The Fab Four, represented by tribute band Abbey Road will engage in a barrage of hits against premier Rolling Stones tribute band Satisfaction. "Beatles vs Stones – A Musical Showdown" comes to the Campbell Heritage Theatre on Sunday, October 29 at 7 pm. Tickets are $35/$45/$55 and may be purchased online at, by phone at(408) 866-2700, or in person at the box office. The Heritage Theatre is located at Campbell Community Center at 1 W. Campbell Avenue, Campbell 95008. There is ample free parking. The show is appropriate for all ages.
