Welcome to Mountain View High School for 2017-2018!

Grissom’s Gazette is a bi-weekly bulletin from Principal Dave Grissom that is sent to parents, students, and families who subscribe by e-list.  It is distributed to provide information about the school, and community activities that follow.  Subscribe to these e-lists by going to .

Principal’s Message

While MVHS always seems to be a hub of activity, nothing compares to the time between now and the end of October.  During this period, we will be having Homecoming, STEM Week, College Awareness Day, and Parent/Teacher conferences.  I list these activities so that you are aware that they are coming and that we are all prepared.  I have included a detailed schedule for the Homecoming festivities in case you would like to be a part of the fun.

Parents should be receiving a mailing this weekend regarding our College Awareness Day and a separate mailing regarding Parent/Teacher conferences.  Please be sure to check these mailings for important information about signing up for conferences.  We will again be doing signups online via our website.  The online submission for the Parent/Teacher conferences opened at 9 a.m. today.

Have a great weekend!

Dave Grissom

MVLA High School Foundation

We need your help!

Next week, parent volunteers will be participating in a two-day phonathon, reaching out to every high school family and asking them to make a donation to support our students. Please help save our hard-working volunteers a call by making your donation no later than Monday, Sept. 25.

This year, the Foundation needs to raise $1.704 million to fund smaller class sizes and programs including Wellness, Innovation Grants, Tutorial Centers, College & Career Centers and more. Details can be found at

To meet this goal, we need every family to make a contribution. Although we suggest $1,000 per student, our goal is 100% family participation. So whatever amount fits your family’s budget will make a difference.

On behalf of our parents, teachers, and students, THANK YOU for keeping our schools strong!

2017-2018 MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series

Admission Matters: What Students and Parents Need to Know About Getting Into College

Sally P. Springer, expert and UC Davis Associate Chancellor Emerita, is well known for her presentations that help students and families better understand and navigate a process that all too often has become a dreaded ordeal, rather than a journey to be undertaken with excitement. Families will get important insights into the admissions process, whether the student is a senior or one or several years away from applying.

Thursday, September 28, 2017, 7 pm at Mountain View High School Spartan Theatre.

Why Parents Matter More Than Peers: Restoring A Healthy Balance in Adult-Child Relationships

Dr. Gabor
Maté, M.D., is highly sought after internationally for his expertise on a range of wellness topics including ADHD, stress, childhood development, and addiction. Rather than offering quick-fix solutions to these complex issues, Dr. Maté weaves together scientific research, case histories, and his own insights as an experienced physician to present a broad perspective that enlightens and empowers parents seeking stronger, more meaningful connection with their children.

Thursday, October 12, 2017, 7 pm at Mountain View High School Spartan Theatre

Snack Bar and Pizza Cart volunteers are needed
Volunteers are needed monthly to help with the Pizza Cart and Snack Bar.  Not only is it a fun way to volunteer, but we feed hungry kids and it helps raise funds for Senior Grad Night.

Shifts are just once a month, though parents can sign up for as many shifts as they like.  There are just a few slots left open for volunteers for both Pizza Cart and Snack Bar.

Please sign up to help if you are interested, or even just fill in as a sub as needed.

The PTSA also has several volunteer positions opens to help with Staff Appreciation, Incoming Freshman programs and New Family Liaisons.  If you have questions or would like more information, please contact Marilyn Stanley at

From the STEM Committee

This fall, MVHS will host Mountain View High School STEM Week, our 6th annual event with a variety of STEM speakers and quad activities for our students.

But before STEM Week can happen, our MVHS STEM Committee will create and organize the event. We are looking for interested MVHS parents and members of our community who are looking for a highly rewarding volunteer opportunity. This will be the last year for some of our committee members so by joining now, we can pass the STEM baton and assure a smooth transition for our STEM future.

Want to join our STEM committee? Please contact Warren Horowitz at warren616w@xxxxxxxxx for more information.

2018 Grad Night

Grad Night plans are well underway and promise to be tons of fun for our Senior Class.

This long-standing tradition of providing our seniors with a safe all-night party, and activity at a surprise location, the night of graduation (June 1, 2018) is not to be missed!  The majority of our students attend, and now it is the best time buy your tickets and get the early bird pricing of $160 until September 30. The cost to send each child to Grad Night is actually $225, so take advantage of this discount!   You may go onto the MVHS website (student activities) to print the registration form.

Challenges of Dyslexia

Wed., Sept., 20, 7-9 pm, Santa Rita Elementary, Los Altos

Join Lindamood-Bell Center Director Leila MacCurrach, for a conversation about how intensive instruction that builds the imagery-language foundation can enable students of all backgrounds and prior diagnoses to learn to read and comprehend to their potential. Lindamood-Bell's intensive, one-to- one, process-based instruction has been used to strengthen the sensory-cognitive functions needed for reading and comprehension. The method has been proven successful for individuals with learning challenges, including dyslexia, hyperlexia, ADHD, and ASD.

From the Tutorial Center

Academic Help for All Students

Encourage your student to use the Tutorial Center in the library. Students at every level benefit from individual and group help, offered 7 am - 4 pm daily. Parent/community volunteers, college and peer tutors, and an instructional aide assist students by appointment or on a drop-in basis in any and all academic areas.

Volunteer Tutor Schedules & Private Tutor Directory Available!

Students and parents may find volunteer tutors available for each subject, on our school web site at

Simply navigate to the MVHS Home Page, and click on ‘Tutorial Center'.  However, the latest Volunteer Tutor Schedule is always posted in the Tutorial Center.  Since tutors and schedules are continually being modified, parents and students should contact the center for the latest information on volunteer tutors available.

Volunteer Tutors Needed

Qualified Volunteer Tutors, i.e., anyone with a bachelors or higher degree, are always needed, especially bilingual (Spanish, French, Mandarin & Japanese). Parents of Mountain View students are especially appreciated and make good tutors—especially of other parents’ children! Hours are flexible. Training is provided on the job. We maintain a private tutor referral list on request.
