Stadium Lights Progress and Agreement

Hi Spartan Nation:

The MVHS Sports Boosters Board wanted to give you an update on the positive progress that is being made on the long road to Stadium Lights at Mountain View / Los Altos High Schools and request your assistance in writing to the MVLA Board of Trustees.

At the March 25th MVLA Board Meeting, we took another positive step forward in the process of getting lights at our Stadiums.  At the meeting, Dr. Jeff Harding, MVLA Superintendent, presented to the Board of Trustees, a draft of a Stadium Lights Usage Agreement.  This Usage Agreement is a result of many hours spent by Dr. Harding gathering input from Administrators, Students, Coaches, Band Directors, Athletic Directors, Athletic and Instrumental Boosters, Neighborhood groups and other interested parties.  After many meetings, conversations and research all of the parties involved have agreed that this is an acceptable and workable proposal that will bring lights to MV & LA, minimize disruption to the neighborhoods and serve the current student needs of both high schools. The intent of this Usage Agreement is to set the accepted standards for the ongoing use of the stadium lights and PA systems at both high schools moving forward.

Although not perfect, the MVHS & LAHS Athletic Boosters are supportive of the Agreement as currently drafted and support moving forward forward with the installation of lights without further delay.  The Board will be waiting 30 days before voting on the Agreement at the May 6 Board meeting in order to receive written feedback from the community on the Agreement.  Our ask of you, please send a note to the Board of Trustees supporting the draft Stadium Lights Usage Agreement and encouraging them to move forward with Stadium Lights without further delay.  Send to trustees (at) MVLAOnce the Board of Trustees approves the Usage Agreement, the next steps will be approving budget for lights, selecting a firm to conduct an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) and finally approving the installation of lights.

You can see the detailed usage agreement on page 187 of the March 25 Board Packet attached below:

To summarize, the draft Stadium Light Usage Agreement spells out the following:

  • Stadium Lights and PA systems shall not be rented to groups outside of the MVLA school district - no rental of stadiums past daylight hours.
  • Stadium lights and PA systems will only be used on Weekdays and Saturdays.
  • Each of the following Varsity teams will get to host 5 home games plus postseason competition under the lights: Football, Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Girls Field Hockey, Track and Field and any new Varsity filed sports approved by the district.
  • Stadium lights but no PA systems can be used on weeknights until 8:30pm for athletic practices.
  • Up to three evening special events per year can be held under the lights with the PA systems but must be done by 9:00pm.
  • Competition level lights shall be turned off within 30 minutes of an events conclusion.
  • Marching bands may practice under the lights with use of the PA system once a week until 8:00pm and once a week until 6:30pm.  Marching bands can practice in the morning, afternoons or Saturdays during daylight hours without restrictions.
  • Marching bands can host one multi-school competition per year with lights off by 7:30pm.

There is much more detail on specifics regarding the use of new PA systems, student conduct and other items in the Board Packet.

Please take a moment to send a note to the MVLA Board of Trustees supporting the draft Stadium Lights Usage Agreement and encouraging them to move forward without further delay in getting lights installed at LAHS and MVHS.  This is an important step in the process and it is vital to let the board know you are in support of the current draft proposal and the installation of Stadium Lights at MVHS / LAHS.

Thank you for you continued support.
